A widget is an android app that can be installed on the android desktop (homescreen). A good is example is the weather channel app/widget. A small widow shows on my home that shows the current temperature and weather in Seattle. Clicking on it brings up the complete application. You install the weather app and get the widget interfaces as part of it. Google has a description at http://developer.android.com/guide/practices/ui_guidelines/widget_design.html
